Hydrangeas Canada's Favorite Flowering Shrub

Hydrangeas Is Canada’s Favorite Flowering Shrub

OK – we promise soon to talk about some great plants that are not Hydrangeas – but we just wanted to get a little more out on what is pretty much Canada’s favourite flowering shrub!

Bobo Hydrangea

First – gotta love that name –Bobo! This dwarf hydrangea will turn heads! Bobo is a delightful plant about 1m high when mature, that is engulfed by large white flowers in summer. The flowers are held upright on strong stems, and continue to grow and lengthen as they bloom. In fall they can turn pinkish. It is an undeniable asset to any garden, particularly those in which space is limited (as are so many of our typical Ontario gardens). Bobo won the Gold Florall medal for best novelty plant and does best in sunny to partially sunny spots.

Bobo prefers good, loamy soil. Adaptable to many soils, moderate moisture required. Blooms regardless of climate, soil, pH or pruning. Prune in late winter/early spring. Fertilize in early spring by applying a slow release fertilizer specialized for trees and shrubs. Follow the label recommendations for rates of application.

BloomStruck Hydrangea

We love the original Endless Summer Hydrangea. That line has given rise to a whole collection and one of the new varieties we really like is BloomStruck! As with all Endless Summer varieties, BloomStruck will boast big, beautiful blooms all summer long, measuring 9-12 cm (3.5 – 5″) across.

BloomStruck also has incredibly beautiful red-purple stems, dark green leaves with red petioles and red veins, which give great contrast to your garden landscape.

Because of BloomStruck’s extremely strong stems, above average heat tolerance and great disease resistance – especially to powdery mildew – it is a perfect combination of beauty and hardiness for your garden! BloomStruck gets a little over 1m tall in the garden – and is a shade or partial shade plant.

Another great feature of BloomStruck and this collection is the ability to change the blooms’ color to your liking. Depending on soil pH, you can have rose-pink, violet or blue flower heads. If your soil’s pH does not produce the color you prefer, try the Endless Summer Color Kits to change your acidity level and, in turn, change your bloom color!

Everlasting Revolution Hydrangea

Last but not least is Everlasting Revolution Hydrangea – with it’s ever changing flower colours….Repeat flowering hydrangeas often disappoint because they can bloom so sporadically. Buy this plant and enlighten your garden with a blooming revolution. Revolution not only flowers on new and old wood, making it sure to bloom for everyone, but the flowers fade to magical colour combinations of deep pink, maroon and true blue, adding green highlights as they age over a long period of time. Each stem is a bouquet, and even a young plant will give you months of blooming enjoyment. This may be the most attractive re-blooming hydrangea ever. Not only is it a gorgeous, tough, long-lasting flower, it’s a blooming machine that is certain to please. Plant gets about 1m tall and likes full sun to partial shade.
